Description
Willingly risking their lives to keep us safe, professional firefighters routinely demonstrate awe-inspiring courage and an uncommon dedication to duty. As the premier advocacy organization for professional firefighters throughout the world, the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) has remained committed to supporting the life-saving work of these extraordinary men and women. Hurricane Harvey unleashed his fury on the Texas coast on August 25th, when it hit the town of Rockport. Then it dropped up to 51 inches of rain in the greater Houston area, causing catastrophic flooding, destroying entire neighborhoods and stranding tens of thousands in homes, shelters and hospitals. It then went out over the Gulf of Mexico, gathering more strength before it hit Louisiana on August 29th. Harvey is the wettest tropical hurricane on record in the contiguous United States. The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, prompted more than 17,000 rescues and caused close to 100 deaths.
To support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts and to celebrate and thank all those who helped the victims in need, this coin was created at the time. The obverse features
scenes from the Houston area, and the reverse is dedicated to the fire fighters involved in the hurricane rescue efforts. This is minted in an antique bronze finish.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inches (49mm) in diameter.
