Founded on November 25, 2002, the Department of Homeland Security was created to better organize and coordinate America’s domestic security resources.
Executing its mission as a fully integrated federal agency focused squarely on protecting the American people and defending the homeland, it provides oversight at every level for border and transportation security, emergency preparedness and response, and information and intelligence analysis.
In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security assumed responsibility for the operation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Collaborating closely with FEMA’s team of crisis management experts, the Department of Homeland Security has helped to maximize the effectiveness of the federal government’s response to natural disasters and other national emergencies.
