Description
As the principal short-range aviation platform of the U.S. Coast Guard, the HH-65A Dolphin is essential to the success of the Coast Guard mission.
This state-of-the art helicopter boasts several unique features, including a shrouded tail rotor and a sophisticated computerized flight management system, which allows for automatic flight control. The highly skilled Dolphin pilots can engage this system to bring the aircraft to a stable hover 50 feet above a selected object, maximizing their ability to sight search targets, even in total darkness or inclement weather. Made from corrosion-resistant composite materials, the twin-engine Dolphin weighs less than 10,000 pounds and can operate at speeds in excess of 150 knots for up to three hours.
This coin pays tribute to the HH-65A Dolphin and salutes all those who help maximize this aircraft’s enormous potential. The obverse features a Dolphin in mid-flight conducting a rescue operation.
Minted in a brass alloy and gently brushed with an antique bronze finish, this coin is struck using special “splash” dies, which give the design an exceptionally high relief.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inches, (44mm) in diameter.
