Description
This distinctive challenge coin embodies the pride of all those who have served Ramstein Air Base, a vital American military asset in the heart of Europe for over six decades.
From its completion in 1952, Ramstein Air Base—known as Flugplatz Ramstein in German (literally “Airfield Ramstein”)—has functioned as a major hub of America’s strategic defense and combat operations worldwide. Originally home to the 86th Fighter-Bomber Wing and its fleet of F-84 Thunderstreaks, the base has hosted numerous units and commands throughout its long and distinguished history. Today, Ramstein Air Base supports the 86th Airlift Wing and serves as headquarters for U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Located near the city of Kaiserslautern in the southwest corner of Germany, Ramstein is the largest NATO-controlled airbase on the European continent and continues to be a critical launch point for America’s strategic air mobility missions throughout the region.
Minted in a rich nickel finish, the obverse of this coin features the traditional coat of arms of Ramstein-Misesenbach, the rural municipality in Germany where the base is situated. Above is the German name for the famed air base. The reverse displays the official insignia of U.S. Air Forces Europe, with the insignia of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing at left and the 86th Airlift Wing at right below—all rendered in precise detail and accented with bold hand-enameled color.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
