It was originally adopted by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights of Malta, a band of courageous Christian warriors who fought to defend the Holy Land against the Muslim invasion during the Crusades. Risking their lives to extinguish the blazes that threatened to destroy the Holy City, these brave men earned a reputation for their exceptional skill and fearless determination.
Surviving the centuries, the Maltese Cross is still worn today by those who willingly sacrifice their lives to protect us from fire’s deadly force.
This coin honors the steadfast commitment of all firefighters – past and present – whose skillful service keeps us safe. The obverse bears a rendering of the Maltese Cross. The reverse features a space for engraving.
Minted in a brass alloy, this coin contains an antique bronze finish. Each coin comes packaged with a detailed header card that salutes the dedication of all Fire and Rescue Personnel.
