Description
The Grumman F4F Wildcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft that entered service in 1940 with the United States Navy, and the British Royal Navy where it was initially known as the Martlet. First used by the British in the North Atlantic, the Wildcat was the only effective fighter available to the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during the early part of the Second World War.
This coin honors the early role played by the F4F Wildcat during World War II and commemorates the aircraft’s enduring legacy of freedom. The obverse features a Wildcat in-flight below the words “American Airpower.” The reverse features the historic emblem of U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Aviation.
Minted in a brass alloy and given an antique bronze finish, the coin’s reverse is imbued with rich enamel accents.
Each coin measures 1 1/2 inch (39mm) in diameter.
