Description

The United States Coast Guard, America’s first and most prestigious maritime law enforcement service, played a vital role in the successful execution of Operation Desert Storm.

Long heralded as America’s elite port security force, the Coast Guard was tasked with the perilous mission of boarding and seizing vessels in the Persian Gulf suspected of aiding the enemy. In the months leading up to the triumphant liberation of Kuwait, Coast Guard sailors answered the call of duty, inspecting more than 300 merchant and cargo ships and providing critical waterside protection for U.S. and allied vessels offloading essential military supplies.

After U.S. and Coalition forces declared victory in February of 1991, a contingent of Coast Guard boats – proudly displaying both the American and Coast Guard flags – were the first to enter Kuwait City’s newly reopened harbor.
