Fearlessly facing brutal winds and stormy seas with unmatched seamanship, Coast Guard Surfmen are considered master sailors.
To qualify as a Surfman, Coast Guard service members must complete advanced training in the operation of the Coast Guard’s heavy surf boats, such as the self-righting Motor Life Boat (MLB), undergo training in actual surf and breaking bar conditions, and successfully complete a rigorous underway check ride. Well equipped to handle all emergency situations, these ruggedly courageous and highly skilled individuals are a key asset to America’s Coast Guard.
