To qualify as a Surfman, Coast Guard service members must complete advanced training in the operation of the Coast Guard’s heavy surf boats, such as the self-righting Motor Life Boat (MLB), undergo training in actual surf and breaking bar conditions, and successfully complete a rigorous underway check ride. Well equipped to handle all emergency situations, these ruggedly courageous and highly skilled individuals are a key asset to America’s Coast Guard.
This coin salutes the enduring commitment of all those who rise to the level of Surfman in the United States Coast Guard. Featured on the obverse is a detailed rendering of the insignia worn by these individuals. Depicted on the reverse is the tri-color racing stripe found on all Coast Guard aircraft and vessels. Embedded in the design is the official Coast Guard emblem, featuring a disk inscribed with the service’s founding date and the shield of the Coat of Arms of the United States, superimposed against a pair of crossed anchors.
Minted in copper nickel and given antique silver finish, this coin is imbued with crisp enamel on both sides.
