“The Rescue Experts” are the guardsmen of Station Sandy Hook in US Coast Guard District 1. This challenge coin is for them, in honor of their immeasurable efforts of service. This port facility located in the state of New Jersey bears the responsibility of monitoring all waters inland and along the coast from East Rockaway Inlet, New York to Long Branch, New Jersey. Because of the station’s deep water pier and accessible location, Station Sandy Hook is also a popular mooring station for visiting Coast Guard cutters and small boats, particularly in periods of foul weather.
Built in 1848, Station Sandy Hook is one of the original and most famous life-saving stations of the US Coast Guard. This rural landscape is also home to the Gateway National Recreation Center, where the Sandy Hook Light, one of the country’s oldest lighthouses, was first lit in 1764. This unit’s missions are extensive, including search and rescue, coastal security, law enforcement, and maritime safety in the frigid waters of the northern Atlantic coast.
Bright enamel hues accent the intricate details of this superb challenge coin. The skies of the Northern Atlantic coast are represented in a bold blue. A goldenrod helm frames the intricate representation of Station Sandy Hook. At the coin’s center is the Sandy Hook lighthouse. Ships that frequent the mooring station are present at either side of the Coast Guard’s Boat Force Operations Insignia. The reverse of this coin displays the US Coast Guard emblem in antique bronze finish.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
