Description
Homeland security, law enforcement, environmental protection, and search and rescue are just some of the mission objectives assigned to the cutter crews at US Coast Guard Station Mayport, Florida. This challenge coin is for our ‘Guardians of the First Coast.’
This multi-mission station is part of the parent command Sector Jacksonville in Atlantic Beach. Mayport is home to three operational cutters: the Hammer, the Kingfisher, and the Maria Bray. Their service is essential to the Jacksonville sector, protecting and monitoring the vessels that navigate the shores of the southern US Atlantic coast. Mayport Station and its ships cover over 40,000 square miles of waterways from Kings Bay, Georgia to Melbourne, Florida. It is also the central depot for federal navigational buoys along Florida’s eastern coast, stretching to Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
The obverse of this vibrant challenge coin combines many images significant to Mayport Station that will certainly evoke nostalgia for those who served in Sector Jacksonville. A Coast Guard cutter sails at the center, superimposed in front of the Dames Point Bridge; its locale indicated with a star on the Florida coastline. The cutter insignia appears in the foreground below the cutter. A Coast Guard life ring acts as the border of the coin in scarlet and white enamel. The reverse of this coin features the US Coast Guard seal in an antique bronze finish.
Minted in a brass alloy, this coin contains rich enamel accents on both sides.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
