Description
Chances are, if you are or were stationed at US Coast Guard Base Boston, you learned to “love that dirty water.” If you policed the highly-traveled waters of Boston Harbor or broke through ice along the New England coast, or performed one of the numerous duties of Base Boston, this challenge coin is for you.
Located near the mouth of the Charles River, US Coast Guard Base Boston is tucked in the tiny North End neighborhood of Boston. Base Boston is home to an astounding number of ships, units, and divisions, including the headquarters of the Coast Guard’s First District, the Coast Guard Cutters Spencer, Seneca, Escanaba, Flying Fish, Pendant, and other small units. US Coast Guard First District is one of only a few stations that regularly perform all eleven mandated Coast Guard missions in its area of responsibility, which is the Atlantic and waterways from the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border south to Brant Rock, Massachusetts, and west as far as New York State.
This handsome challenge coin is bronze and given an antique finish, and is imbued with durable and attractive enamel, resembles the densely-packed city and bustling energy of Base Boston. The red, white, and blue of the American flag serve as a stately backdrop for the Coast Guard Light Station Boston of Brewster Island in Boston Harbor, featured in the center. The US Coast Guard seal appears at the left, with Boston’s cityscape in the distance accented in enamel. The reverse features the Coast Guard seal.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
