Sector Buffalo is responsible for safety and security of the entire eastern Great Lakes.
Sector Buffalo was commissioned on July 22, 2005. Three former and separate commands were merged together to form what is now known as a “Sector”. The three former commands were Group Buffalo, Marine Safety Office (MSO) Buffalo, and MSO Cleveland. Group Buffalo primarily led the Search and Rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement, and Aids to Navigation missions. Group Buffalo provided support and command for 12 Search and Rescue Stations and 1 Aids to Navigation Team.
The sailors who serve Sector Buffalo skillfully execute operations across all Coast Guard mission areas, including maritime law enforcement, aids to navigation maintenance, maritime mobility, and search and rescue. As a subordinate command of the Coast Guard’s Ninth District, Sector Buffalo plays an important role in securing the eastern Great Lakes region with its myriad lakes and waterways, and in so doing, strengthening the nation’s domestic defense network.
