Description
The massive expanse of NASA’s Michoud Facility provides the critical space and stable structure necessary for the resilient members of US Coast Guard’s Aids to Navigation Team New Orleans or Personnel Services Support Unit New Orleans to continue operations and uphold their primary missions and support in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. This challenge coin serves as a tangible symbol of the willingness and ability of these essential personnel to adapt to the conditions of their service.
Despite the demolition of the structures and facilities of the US Coast Guard’s Aids to Navigation Team New Orleans (ANT NOLA) and Personnel Services and Support Unit New Orleans (PSSU NOLA) by Katrina, the units have restructured and established as tenant commands at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. Today, Michoud is manufacturing and assembling some of the largest parts of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS)—the world’s most powerful rocket that will send the Orion spacecraft, astronauts and supplies on bold exploration missions to the Moon and beyond.
The mission of the Personnel Services and Support Unit is to facilitate and sustain effective mission support by delivering quality administrative, personnel, housing and educational services to all customers throughout the Gulf Coast.
The Aids to Navigation Team New Orleans (ANT NOLA) primary mission is maintaining aids to Navigation (ATON). ANT NOLA maintains aids to navigation along the Mississippi River of various lakes, bayous and canals and rivers including Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lake Borgne, and all connecting channels. They also aid in the navigation of the Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) from English Lookout to Dupree cut/Barataria Waterway, the Mississippi River Favret to Mississippi River Gartness, and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO).
The obverse of this distinctive challenge coin minted in nickel features the NASA seal with NASA MICHOUD, LOUISIANA around the perimeter. The reverse side bears the US Coast Guard seal .
