Gunners Mates are the Coast Guard’s small arms weapons specialists, working across all Coast Guard operations throughout the world.
Technically proficient in the operation, maintenance, and repair of all Coast Guard ordnance and gunnery equipment, their expertise is highly sought after and appreciated. Working with pistols, rifles, and machine guns, and 76mm gun weapons systems, they train Coast Guard personnel in the proper handling and discharge of weapons, ammunition, and pyrotechnics.
This coin pays tribute to the skill and dedication of all Gunners Mates, whose service is vital to the law enforcement and defense mission of the U.S. Coast Guard. Featured on the obverse is a detailed rendering of the insignia worn by these individuals. In honor of the Coast Guard’s heritage as America’s oldest continuous maritime force, the reverse depicts a team of intrepid Coast Guard sailors braving rough surf as they approach a lighthouse and features a space for engraving.
Struck in a nickel alloy and gently brushed with an antique finish, this coin is accented with crisp enamel highlights. Each coin comes packaged with a descriptive header card that underscores the unique contributions of Coast Guard Gunners Mates.
