Description

This coin salutes the second ship in the Coast Guard’s Fast-Response Cutter fleet. The cutter is named in honor of Richard Etheridge, who served heroically as keeper of the Pea Island life-saving station on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for more than 20 years. A former slave, Etheridge rose to become the first African-American to command a life-saving station.

Prominently pressed on the coin’s obverse is the crest of USCG Cutter Richard Etheridge, rendered in full color enamel. The reverse bears the emblem of the United States Coast Guard.
