Based in Seattle, Washington, USCG Mellon is named in honor of Andrew W. Mellon, 49th Secretary of the US Treasury. Commissioned on January 9, 1968 as a member of the Coast Guard’s 378-feet Hamilton-class High-Endurance Cutter fleet, she saw extensive service during the Vietnam War.
As a High-Endurance Cutter, USCG Mellon is a floating command center with a flight deck capable of landing a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter, state-of-the-art communications, and a crossing range of 10,000 miles at 20 knots. She holds the distinction as the first and only Coast Guard cutter to be fitted with the Harpoon missile system.
This coin honors the crew of USCG Mellon WHEC 717—past and present. The obverse feature’s the ship’s crest in full color, including the Latin motto “Primus Inter Pares,” which means “first among equals.” The Coast Guard insignia is pressed on the reverse.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
