Description
Performing ground handling of aircraft, regular maintenance inspections, and aviation administrative duties, Aviation Survival Technicians (ASTs) are vital to the operational effectiveness of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Aviation Survival Technicians inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and repair cargo aerial delivery, drag parachute, aircraft oxygen, and helicopter flotation systems as well as special purpose protective clothing and other survival equipment for air sea rescue kits. In addition to these duties, ASTs train aviators and aircrew in survival techniques, such as shallow-water egress tactics.
This coin is dedicated to all Aviation Survival Technicians, whose knowledge and skill help prepare the Coast Guard’s aviators for every emergency. Featured on the obverse is a detailed rendering of the insignia worn by these individuals. In honor of the Coast Guard’s heritage as America’s oldest continuous maritime force, the reverse depicts a team of intrepid Coast Guard sailors braving rough surf as they approach a lighthouse and features a space for engraving.
Struck in a nickel alloy, this coin is accented with crisp enamel highlights.
Each coin measures 1 3/4 inch (44mm) in diameter.
