Description
Located in beautiful Southern California, on the beaches of San Diego, Naval Base Point Loma is home to over 22,000 Navy and civilian personnel, and consists of seven different facilities including Submarine Base, Fleet Antisubmarine Warfare Training Center, Fleet Combat Training Center Pacific, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), SPAWAR Systems Center, the Fleet Intelligence Command Pacific and Naval Consolidated Brig, Miramar.
Originally a Spanish stronghold, the site where Naval Base Point Loma sits has been coveted for many years. After the defeat of the Mexican army in the Mexican-American War, President Fillmore assigned the area to the U.S. Army for the purposes of protecting the coast. In 1959 the fort was turned over to the U.S. Navy and used to support our growing Pacific submarine fleet.
Minted from solid bronze, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this medallion is dedicated to the former and current Naval and Civilian personnel who have proudly served this great Naval Base in its important role securing our nation’s freedom. The obverse depicts emblem of Naval Base Point Loma. The reverse depicts an emblem of the US Navy, featuring an eagle grasping an anchor in its talons, encircled by chains and rope, symbolic of naval traditions dating back to the nation’s first ships.
Each coin measures 1.75 inch (44mm) in diameter.
