An inspiring orator and gifted leader, Abraham Lincoln articulated the vision of America’s promise better than any other statesman of his day.
As the sixteenth President of the United States (1861-1865), he led the nation through its most difficult hour, fighting tirelessly to preserve the integrity of the union and refusing to abandon the principles on which America was founded.
Born in 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Lincoln moved to Illinois at the age of twenty-one. He began his distinguished political career in 1834 as a Representative in the Illinois State Legislature and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar as an attorney just three years later in 1837.
After serving for four consecutive terms as a state representative, Lincoln helped to found the Republican Party in 1856, and was instrumental in shaping the party’s anti-slavery platform. Just four years later, he was nominated as the presidential candidate for the party he helped to create. On November 6, 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the United States and went on to become one of the greatest leaders in American history.
As part of the Illinois Commemorative Medallion Series, this coin pays tribute to Abraham Lincoln’s dedicated service to the State of Illinois and the nation at large. The obverse features a rendering of America’s Sixteenth President. The reverse bears the Seal of the State of Illinois.
Minted in a brass alloy with an antique bronze finish, this coin comes packaged in an acrylic capsule and includes a certificate of authenticity that describes Abraham Lincoln’s important legacy.
